Apex Skip-Its Tryout Standards

We are so excited that you are considering trying out for the Apex Skip-Its! Please note that the requirements below are the minimum requirements. Particularly on double-unders and single routine, the more double-unders the better, and the more tricks and the fewer mistakes are better in a single routine. Additionally, content of character and good sportsmanship will be taken into consideration. We may ask for teacher/coach references.

We are committed to maintaining a team of 40 jumpers or less, and we will know how many spots we have available on September 1st. All of these factors will impact our try-outs and our 2023-’24 team. We want to encourage and remind anyone that is considering trying-out that this takes a lot of courage, we will be pulling for you and will do anything in our power to assist you in the process as you prepare for September 7th.

Tryout standards are as follows:

2nd grade: 10 double unders; Skip-Its parade routine*; single routine with 10 tricks or more; jump 10 x’s your age with no mistakes.
3rd grade: 20 double unders; Skip-Its parade routine*; single routine with 10 tricks or more; jump 10 x’s your age with no mistakes.
4th grade: 30 double unders; Skip-Its parade routine*; single routine with 12 tricks or more; jump 10 x’s your age with no mistakes.
5th grade & up: 40 double unders; Skip-Its parade routine*; single routine with 12 tricks or more; jump 10 x’s your age with no mistakes.

TRYOUTS WILL TAKE PLACE ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH 2023

6:30 – 8:00PM AT APEX UNITED METHODIST CHURCH GYM

We will have a 4-day after-school jump rope clinic before tryouts, to help anyone interested, with the skills necessary to make the team.

Apex Skip-Its Parade Routine

Step-by-step Instructions:

  1. Side Swing (R), Side Swing (L), Side Swing (R), Side Swing (L), Swing Kick (R), Swing Kick (L) – on the swing kicks, your foot starts behind you. Also, you will need to actually jump while performing the 4 side swings.
  2. Single Bounce Left Foot, Single Bounce Right Foot, Double Bounce Left Foot (hop twice on your left foot), Single Bounce Right Foot, Single Bounce Left foot, Double Bounce Right foot (hop twice on your right foot)
  3. Double bounce both feet, 360 turn to the right – double bouncing each jump. Hint – start by taking a forward double bounce jump on two feet (you will actually jump the rope on beats 1, 5 & 7)
  4. Basic Jump, Criss-Cross, Double bounce, Basic Jump, Criss-Cross, Double bounce. Hint – as you are opening up each criss cross, that’s when you begin the double bounce (beats 3 & 4 after first cross; beats 7 & 8 after second cross)

Repeat! And smile!!!

Each line (1 – 4) represents 8 counts!

Your feet jump 8 times (for each line 1 -4), so it may help you to count out loud – “1, 2, 3…”

Song Title: “Reach up; Papas got a brand new pig bag”. By – Perfecto Allstarz

There is a 16 count intro. Begin immediately after this. On the second 8 count of the intro, say outloud (or have a parent or Skip-It coach, who can count 8 counts): “5, 6, 7, 8”. As you’re saying “7”, begin moving your rope. This way, on beat “1”, your rope is hitting the ground next to you on the right (side swing). If you wait to start your rope until after you say the number, “8”, you’ll be behind from the get-go.
